NEWTON, Texas (KTRE) - A woman has been arrested after an investigation into her baby’s health.

According to Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard, deputies began a criminal investigation into Gayla Caldwell after allegations were made of child endangerment. The allegations were that Caldwell’s newborn baby tested positive for several controlled substances at birth.

The deputies conducted interviews and coordinated with the Department of Family and Protective Services. They brought the evidence before a judge who issued an arrest warrant for Caldwell. She was arrested and brought to the Newton County Jail for abandonment/endangerment of a child, according to Havard.
