The Brookeland Wildcats are another step closer to their goal; of winning a State Basketball Championship after defeating Moulton in game one of a double header in Madisonville on Tuesday night. Game two of the double header went into overtime as Fayetteville eliminated Wells in overtime to earn the right to face Brookeland in the Region 4 Championship game.
Brookeland never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 10 to 2 lead before Moulton battled back tying the score twice in the opening quarter, but never able to take the lead. At the end of the first quarter Brookeland led by one point 18 to 17. In the early part of the second quarter both teams continued to play hard and the score remained close, but Brookeland’s Zack Beatty hit two three-point shots, and the Wildcats outscored the Bobcatz, 18 to 8 in the quarter giving Brookeland an eleven-point lead going into halftime.
In the third quarter Beaty and Landon Smith put the Wildcats almost out of reach as Beatty had ten points including two three-point shots while Smith drove into the lane scoring nine points in the quarter. Brookeland outscored Moulton 23 to 16 in the third quarter and led by 18 points 59 to 41 heading into the final quarter. Beatty for a second quarter in a row scored ten points of the Wildcats 20 points in the quarter leading to a 21-point win 79 to 58.
Beatty led the scoring with 30 points, Smith had 20 points and Sam Ross was also in double figures with 10 points. Riley Simas scored 7 points, D’Anthony Johnson had 6 points, DQ Richards, Hayden Hilderbrand and Carson McAdams all had 2 points each.
The Wildcats stayed for the game between the Wells Pirates and the Fayetteville Lions that was the second game of the night at Madisonville. Coach Brandon Shumake and the team were able to scout both teams knowing that they would play the winner for the Regional Championship. Fayetteville won the game in overtime to set up the third time in three years that the two teams have played in the Regional Championship game.
The regonal final game between Brookeland and Fayetteville will take place on Friday at 7:00 pm in Cleveland.
