Winds out of the south were both a friend and a foe to firemen on Wednesday afternoon when what started out as a controlled burn spread to two outbuildings behind a home near Brookeland in the north end of Jasper County. Firemen said the wind that pushed the fire to the two buildings also pushed at away from a two story home less than 50 feet away.
The volunteers of the Lake Rayburn Fire Department were dispatched to the location home on County Road 219, just west of Highway 96, shortly after 3:00, when it was reported that one building was on fire and flames quickly spreading to another.
Firemen arrived with a large contingent of men and equipment and immediately went work battling the blaze but the fire was simply too far along when they got there and both buildings and the contents in them were a complete loss.
The owner of the home Charlie Roberston said he was glad he was able to rescue his beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycle from one of the burning buildings as the fire spread.
No injuries resulted from the incident.
