Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth says a man in the Shankleville Community lit a large household waste fire and then left the blaze unattended. The fire spread onto two adjoining properties, coming within just a few feet of a woman’s house and also burned across a neighbor’s pasture. It happened Thursday afternoon on County Road 1036, which is off of Farm to Market Road 1415. Duckworth said due to the circumstances he requested a Newton County deputy to respond, and both a captain and a sergeant showed up at the scene. However, Duckworth says he is very upset because the deputies refused to issue a citation to the man who was responsible for the fire and the damage that it caused. KJAS News spoke to Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby about the situation. Burby said that he was unaware of the incident, but he did say “I will investigate this and if a citation is merited, then a citation will be issued. That is our policy.”
