It was a close call but no injuries resulted from a two vehicle auto accident that occurred on Highway 63, west of Jasper on Monday afternoon involving a state vehicle. The accident occurred shortly before 3:00 as heavy rains fell in the northwest most part of Jasper County, not far from the Angelina County line.
The driver of an early model Ford F-250 pickup truck owned by the Inland Fisheries Division of the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, Ray Linderman said he was headed east on Highway 63, with a boat in tow, when he looked up to see a early model Toyota Tundra pickup truck, which was westbound, turning sideways in the road.
Linderman said he did everything he could to avoid the crash and ended up hitting the truck and then sliding off the highway into the woods where he hit a large pine tree almost head on.
Both vehicles were severely damaged and debris from the Toyota, which was apparently being used as a work truck, was scattered all across the road.
Ironically, Linderman and his passenger, nor the driver of the Toyota were injured in the crash.
Officers believe the Toyota hit a large patch of water in the road during the heavy rain and hydroplaned.
