TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The battle for an East Texas neighborhood fighting feral hogs is making progress. A trapper hired by the city of Gladewater has made a big catch. News came to residents of a south Gladewater neighborhood that they had been waiting for. Nearly two dozen feral hogs were captured in one trap. “Hogs are running wild around here. The lady down the street, they wouldn’t let her out of her car one day,” said neighbor Alan Brown. Professional trapper Chet Austin was hired by the city of Gladewater to find the pesky porkers, but it’s not as easy as just setting a trap. “A lot of damage in that area, most of them are coming from the Sabine bottoms. Once you set the trap up, they don’t always walk in,” Austin says. But once they did, Austin triggered the trap remotely. It was welcome news to many residents who had seen the consistent damage to their properties. “Because they make a mess when they get on people’s property,” Brown says. But this was just the first round. “A second sounder, which is what a hog herd is called, will move in once that group is gone, They’ll come in to take over the area. We will be moving another trap down there. This is going to be an ongoing issue,” Austin says. And the feral hogs? “Normally they’re taken to an authorized holding facility and they’re delivered to a USDA processing facility in the state and most of that meat is then shipped overseas,” the trapper says. “I like that. Maybe he caught all of them,” says Brown. Austin will continue to set traps in the neighborhood until there aren’t any further signs of feral hogs coming to
