They’re having an ongoing problem in Polk County with thieves cutting and stealing above ground fiber-optic lines for the small amount of copper that’s in the lines. Depending on which line is cut, it can interrupt telephone, cable, or internet service. Law enforcement says the suspects in these cases are generally drug addicts who sell the copper to metal recycling businesses for a small amount of money to buy drugs. Polk County Sheriff Byron Lyons says the problem began in November south and southeast of Livingston, but so far they’ve not been able to identify a suspect, or suspects.
