Texarkana officer injured in dog attack

TEXARKANA, Texas - A Texarkana, Texas police officer is recovering after being seriously injured in a dog attack. The officer was responding to a call Friday night in the 700 block of Wilson Street about some dogs that had attacked a woman. Officer Chris Flores received serious injuries to both arms, which included muscle damage to one arm and 23 cuts to the other arm. The woman who was also attacked by the dogs was treated for a bite on her wrist. Both the officer and the woman have been treated and released from the hospital. "From my understanding she was basically dog sitting these dogs for a neighbor. She went to let them out to do their business and at that point they attacked her," Shawn Vaughn, Texarkana, Texas Police Department Public Information Officer. Police say after the attack the woman ran back into her home and called 911. When Officer Chris Flores showed up to the neighborhood, he was mauled by two large pit bulls. According to the police report, Officer Flores was able to hit one of the dogs with his flashlight, but was quickly overwhelmed by their attack. "He found himself in the middle of these two dogs almost immediately and didn't have an opportunity to react in any way whatsoever," said Vaughn. When Officer Matthew Lindsey showed up to the scene, he was able to stop the attack by spraying the dogs with a fire extinguisher. Officer Flores was quickly loaded into a patrol unit and taken to the hospital. Police do not believe any charges will be filed against the owner of the dog.
