Sheriff says mass shooting was a result of an ongoing feud... all suspects from Newton

Jasper County, Texas, Four people are now in custody in connection with the mass shooting that took place on Sunday morning just north of Jasper and Sheriff Mitchell Newman said Friday morning that an ongoing feud was believed to be the cause and motive of the incident. Mike Lout/KJAS.com filed this report: In a press conference held at 9:00 on Friday morning at the Jasper County Sheriff's Department, Newman identified the suspects as; Tracy Hickman, Cameron Hartsfield, and Tyler Porter, all 19, and Cheston Hartsfield, 18, all of Newton. He said that a feud or squabble had apparently been going on for some time. Newman said all four suspects were charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity. However, additional charges are expected to be brought forth by the Jasper Police Department. In addition, Newman said additional charges and arrests might be forthcoming as the investigation continues. Newman said Cheston Hartsfield and Hickman, who were arrested in Louisiana, were being held in the Beauregard Parish Jail in DeRidder. He said Cameron Hartsfield, who was arrested in Woodville, and Porter, who was arrested in Newton County, were being held in the Jasper County Jail. Word is that an extradition hearing will take place sometime on Friday or Saturday to determine when the two suspects arrested in Louisiana will be brought back to Jasper County as is required by the State of Louisiana. Police are now saying that it was the investigation conducted by the Jasper Police Department into the shooting which occurred at the intersection of Valley Drive and Bevil Loop Road on the southeast side of Jasper that resulted in the identity of the suspects. A total of 11 people, ranging in ages from 15 to 19, were injured in the shooting that rang out shortly after midnight on Sunday morning on County Road 263, just north of Jasper, at an after-prom party. Foster said during the press conference that so far there were no indication that the shooting that occurred in southeast Jasper had anything to do with the recent shooting of Elvin Land, a man who was shot in the arm as he looked out the window of his home some two weeks ago. Land's home is less than a block from where the shooting occurred at the corner of Valley Drive and Bevil Loop Road.
