Scammers once again using the telephone to get information

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Local law enforcement is warning about another scam in the area. Interim Jasper Police Chief Mike Poindexter said Monday that someone is calling residents of the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Area claiming to be a representive of the Federal Trade Commission investigating false charges on credit cards and other accounts. Poindexter said while the callers appear to be very official, they are without a doubt just another attempt to obtain bank account numbers, social security numbers and other personal information. Poindexter warns all residents to never give out information to anyone who calls you. Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman has said many times, “Sad but true, very few if any people will call you to help you”. He says they usually have alterier motives. Once again the key message here is don’t give information out to anyone that calls you.
