San Augustine constable candidate accused of driving, crashing while intoxicated

SAN AUGUSTINE, Texas (KTRE) - A candidate for San Augustine County constable was arrested for driving while intoxicated Sunday following a crash, according to DPS.

According to DPS, Joseph Kent Waggonner, 35, of San Augustine crashed on County Road 318, near County Road 317 around 11:30 p.m.

DPS said Waggonner told a trooper that he swerved to the left to avoid hitting a deer and his car overturned. Waggonner displayed signs of intoxication and was arrested, according to DPS.

According to unofficial election results, Waggonner won the March 3 primary for Precinct 3 constable as a Republican.

No Democratic candidate ran for Precinct 3 constable in the primary.

Waggonner was charged with driving while intoxicated and booked into the San Augustine County Jail.
