Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox has died. Maddox, who had been suffering from medical problems, died at his home in Sabine County on Thursday morning. He was 75 years of age.
Maddox had a long history in law enforcement, serving as a State Trooper for many years before becoming sheriff over 30 years ago. He had also served as president of the Texas Sheriff's Association.
The Sabine County Sheriff's Department released the following statement:
The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office regrets to inform all local media outlets, this morning, shortly after 5am, Sheriff Tom Maddox passed away at his home, in Sabine County, surrounded by family, due to medical complications from a long-term illness. Funeral arrangements are pending and any arrangements will be announced when finalized. Cards and flowers can be sent to the family/Sabine County Sheriff’s Office via the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office located at 310 Main Street Hemphill, Texas 75948. Sheriff Maddox was serving as the current Sheriff of Sabine County Texas and had been since 2001. He was also a former President of the Texas Sheriff’s Association and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper. The State of Texas is a better place due to the efforts of Sheriff Tom Maddox. His leadership and determination will be missed by all.
The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office, the Houston Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the San Augustine County Sheriff’s Office, the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office, the Hemphill Police Department and a host of other local law enforcement agencies, all assisted in escorting Sheriff Maddox home from the hospital yesterday afternoon.
The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office offers their condolences to the Maddox family, the community and would also like to express our appreciation for the cooperation and assistance displayed among those law enforcement agencies that assisted in getting our Sheriff home.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will be held Sunday February 16, 2025 at the West Sabine High School in Pineland.
