Police in Beaumont say an eldery man died when he was hit by a vehicle attempting to flee from a traffic stop on Saturday morning. Sergeant Thomas Swope said the crash occurred at 10:05 a.m. when officers attempted to stop a driver for a traffic violation near the intersection of Eastex Freeway and Lucas. Swipe said the driver fled in a dark-colored Audi at a high rate of speed, entered the intersection of Gladys and Lucas, and crashed into sedan driven by 83-year-old Henry Knoblochar of Beaumont. Knoblochar was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr. Police say the driver of the run away vehicle, who has not been identified, pending formal charges and arraignment was taken to a Beaumont hospital, where he was treated. However, they say the driver who had warrants out for his arrest in both Jefferson and Orange Counties was later transferred to a hospital in the Houston Area. An investigation into the incident is continuing.
