Officers with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department say a routine patrol led to a significant drug arrest in the early hours of Sunday morning. They say it all began shortly before 8:00 when a person living on Coffin Road in the far south end of Jasper County, near Evadale reported a suspicious vehicle. Sergeant Herb Kelley, who was patrolling nearby neighborhoods, responded to the call and located the vehicle. Upon initiating a traffic stop, Sergeant Kelley identified the driver as Vernon Heath Morton, 37, of Vidor, who was alleged to have had methamphetamine in the vehicle. Morton was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony, as well as traffic warrants. He was placed in the Jasper County Jail. Sheriff Chuck Havard emphasized the department's commitment to combating drugs and thefts in the area.
