Jasper Police Captain Mike Poindexter said Wednesday that he couldn’t disclose specific details, but he did say that investigators are following new leads in a February 9th murder and house fire. The blaze was discovered at about 1:00 in the morning in the 1300 block of East Milam Street, and after the flames were extinguished Jasper firefighters found the body of 57-year-old Rexie McMullen, II.
Police said it was discovered at autopsy that McMullen had been shot to death before the fire, which fire investigators say began on the front porch of the home.
Early on in the investigation, Jasper Police Chief Gerald Hall told us that two specific people had been tabbed as “persons of interest” and investigators were tracking down other people that they wanted to interview. However, police later said that effort didn’t result in any progress in the investigation.
McMullen’s son, Rexie McMullen III, told KJAS News that his father was from Lufkin and had suffered a series of brain aneurysms many years ago which left him with both mental and physical challenges. McMullen said his father had most recently been staying in the Jasper home with a woman. However, it’s not known if that woman is one of the people that Jasper Police have been questioning.
