One person is dead and another undergoing hospital treatment following a fire that broke out on Sunday morning on Farm to Market Road 2800 on the northwest side of Jasper.
The volunteers of the Jasper Fire Department were dispatched to the location just west of the Sweetbriar Apartments shortly before 8:00, when it was reported that the small wood frame home was completely engulfed in flames and one person possibly still inside.
Upon their arrival the firemen from Jasper immediately went to work battling the blaze and at the same time called for help from two nearby fire departments as a deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department, Bryan Gray helped the owner of the home, Linda Williams to get out of the burning house. However, after the fire was knocked down firemen said they found the body 55 year old Jason Dennis. Dennis, who had recently suffered from a stroke and was partially paralyzed, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Raymond Hopson.
What caused the fire is unknown. However, as of Sunday afternoon investigators from the Texas Fire Marshal's Office were on the scene sifting through the rubble as they attempt to determine what sparked the blaze.
Jasper firefighter Hagen Stewart is also being credited with saving a young dog.
Farm to Market Road 2800 was blocked for some time by fire trucks and other emergency vehicles.
