It appears that Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby will be trading his sheriff badge in for another badge at the end of the year. Burby who was defeated in the last election by Colton Havard had said he was going home to retire again. However, word came this week that Burby has been asked by Newton County Judge Ronnie Cochran and others to temporarily fill the Newton County Precinct 2 Constable Seat. Burby will replace Jeff McCoy who has announced that he is moving out of the County and will no longer be able to serve. Burby had retired from Texas City, where he served as police chief for many years before retiring in Newton County. However, he later decided to run for and was elected sheriff and served for soon to be four years. Burby said Monday, "They asked me to serve and I told them I would."
