A Newton County Sheriff's Office investigation led to a Saturday night raid of an alleged dogfighting ring in the Call community off FM 1004 and the arrest of more than 40 people, according to information Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard provided to KFDM News.
Those charged with attending a dogfighting event face a Class A Misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $4,000.
The raid is the result of an ongoing investigation and more arrests are possible, according to Sheriff Havard. He says dogfighting and animal cruelty won't be tolerated in Newton County. Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard told us he's glad his department could assist.
A number of agencies assisted in the raid, including the Jasper County Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Chuck Havard, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Newton County Precinct 1 Constable, and Jasper County Precinct 6 Constable.
