Members of the community gathered for the official opening of the new heliport on Thursday at nearby Lake Sam Rayburn as the facility was dedicated to the late Gary Collins, a man that was very influential in the growth on the lake as well as a promoter of fire protection and medical care.
Local officials say the Gary Collins Memorial Helipad will provide a much needed location for emergency medical helicopters to land 24 hours a day in a clear, lighted and marked facility, allowing the transfer of patients in need of urgent care.
The pad, which was built next to the Total Care of the Lake medical clinic owned and operated by the Jasper Hospital District on Recreational Road 255, also known as the Sam Rayburn Parkway was funded by the Jasper County Development District #1 in cooperation with the Jasper County Hospital District and Emergency Services District #4.
