The city commissioners of Marshall have voted to move forward to build a new animal shelter.
It was a standing room only as citizens waited for the decision.
The resolution on the agenda was an express of commitment of the city to pay for a new shelter.
Right now, they have about $300,000 saved up and on Thursday night, in a 5 to 1 vote, they city has committed to bring in about $530,000 more.
Commissioner Vernia Calhoun was the only one to opposed the decision. She says Marshall doesn't have enough money to build the shelter. Some citizens agree, but most were happy with the decision.
"When you consider the analysis of the city's budget, going forward with this allocation $600,000 or $700,000, we're going to be in deficit spending," said Kenneth Moon.
"I think to have a plan to which way we want to go with the animal shelter, it's a big accomplishment for the community," Jerry Cargill said.
Marshall city manager Mark Rohr says the money will come from private sector fundraising.
