A wanted man who state troopers say led them in a high speed pursuit on Tuesday and then managed to elude capture is now in custody. Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard says 39-year-old Antonio DeWayne Jackson, of Burkeville, walked into the sheriff’s department at about noon Wednesday and surrendered.
Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Shana Clark said Tuesday that Jackson had been the subject of a lengthy investigation for drug activity, and a federal grand jury had recently indicted him on a charge of Manufacture & Delivery of Methamphetamine.
Sergeant Clark said shortly before noon on Tuesday, a trooper spotted Jackson leaving a house in Burkeville and tried to stop him, but Jackson began fleeing at a high rate of speed in a Dodge Charger and during the pursuit he threw out more than 6 ounces of methamphetamine.
The pursuit went onto Highway 63 toward Jasper County, but the trooper lost sight of Jackson's car around the Jasper-Newton County line.
At about 1:00, officers found the car abandoned on County Road County Road 1570 off of Farm to Market Road 1012, just southwest of the Farrsville Community.
Jackson is now in the Newton County Jail under the federal charge, while he may also face additional charges related to the pursuit.
