LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Lufkin police had to resort to breaking a vehicle window in order to rescue a child left behind.
According to a Lufkin police press release, officers were called to the 100 block of North Timberland Drive around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday on a report of a child left in a vehicle. The officers could not get the child to respond to knocks on the window, so they broke the driver’s side window and removed the child.
Police learned the child, who was under the age of 5, had been accidentally left in the vehicle five hours earlier when the driver and other family members were going to Houston for a sports event and met in the parking lot to gather into one vehicle for the trip. The child was to be dropped off with family who were staying in Lufkin but the driver forgot the child was in the car and did not leave the child with family, according to the press release.
Lufkin police arrested the driver on a charge of abandonment of child.
