JASPER, Texas (KTRE) - A Kirbyville man is behind bars after the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said he hit a 10-year-old child with a belt during an altercation last month.

Markel Simmons, 18, was held Thursday at the Jasper County Jail for a warrant charging him with injury to a child, Investigator A.J. Noel said.

The arrest stems from an altercation May 24 in the 7700 block of U.S. 190 East in Jasper County.

Noel said Simmons hit the child with a belt, causing bruising.

Deputies arrested Simmons around 10:30 a.m. Thursday at his home in the 8000 block of County Road 451 in Jasper County.

Charged with a third-degree felony, Simmons could face two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.
