Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard said Sunday that deputies with his department had arrested a Jasper man in connection with a burglary in Brookeland.

According to Havard, deputies were dispatched to the location in 200 block of Longleaf Drive when a resident reported that it appeared that someone was taking items out of their neighbor's garage.

According to Havard, the deputies later learned that a possible suspect had left the home on a golf cart and a short time later located the suspect on a wooded trailer near County Road 225.

Havard said the suspect, Alexander Josef Thornton, 41, was taken into custody and that officers also found illegal drugs such as Xanax and Valium in his possession. In addition, officers also learned that the golf cart Thornton was riding had also been stolen from the home.

Thornton was transported to the Jasper County Jail where he was said to have been charged with Burglary of a Building and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Havard that he was glad to report that the items allegedly stolen from the garage were returned to the property owner and that his staff are committed to combating criminal activity in Jasper Count and that he wanted to thank the deputies for their fast response and a job well done.
