A Friday night crash at the Jasper-Newton County line left a Groves mother and her teenage daughter dead and sent a 9-year-old boy to the hospital, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety and family members.

DPS identified the driver of the Chevrolet as 35-year-old Meagan Martin of Groves. DPS said Martin died after another driver crashed into her car on SH 62 at the Jasper/Newton County line.

Family members said Martin’s 13-year-old daughter, Serenity Rivera of Hemphill, died at CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth. Relatives also confirmed Rivera was Martin’s daughter.

DPS said an additional passenger in the Chevrolet, identified as a 9-year-old male child, was transported to a Beaumont hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Family members said the boy is Martin’s son.

Family members said Martin was an RN and respiratory therapist at Baptist Hospital.

Photos related to the victims were provided by relatives, including one image from 2017.
