QUITMAN, Texas (KLTV) - A former Quitman water clerk accused of stealing money while employed with the city has repaid the full amount.
Amber Raelynn Highnote, 37, of Alba, was indicted on a charge of theft in 2022, but she has now repaid the $23,250 she was accused of stealing, according to a release from the Wood County District Attorney’s Office.
The theft took place from about Feb. 16, 2018, until July 8, 2021, as Highnote “methodically stole money from the water department,” the release said. After Highnote had resigned, another employee noticed customer receipts did not match actual deposits received, an affidavit revealed.
Judicial records show she was arrested on Jan. 28, 2022, indicted in June of that year, and pleaded on April 4, 2025.
Highnote repaid the balance on March 31, 2025, and the district attorney’s release says she complied with the conditions of her bond throughout the duration of the case.
“The repayment of this money satisfies the desire of the City of Quitman leadership to obtain the return of the stolen money for citizens, and it accomplishes justice consistent with the facts of this case,” Wood County Criminal District Attorney Angela Albers said.
