Former Cass County coach gets 60 years for sexually abusing students

LINDEN, Texas (KLTV) - A former coach for Atlanta High School will spend 60 years in prison for child sex crimes after a Friday conviction. Taureaus Alvaro Maxwell, 31, of Texarkana, was arrested on April 26, 2023, after allegations of misconduct arose involving a student. In a Tuesday press release from the Cass County District Attorney’s Office, it was revealed that multiple students were victims of Maxwell, and his crimes earned him 60 consecutive years in prison. According to the release, Maxwell attempted to solicit multiple students using Snapchat. After numerous interviews were conducted with Maxwell’s victims, enough evidence was gathered to garner a guilty verdict in court, the release said. Maxwell was charged with four counts of indecency with a child by contact and four counts of improper relationship between educator and student. According to the release, a Cass County jury convicted him of all eight charges with the maximum sentence of 20 years for each. Three of the 20-year sentences will run consecutively, and the rest will be concurrent.
