COUSHATTA, La. (KSLA) — One person died and a Red River Parish sheriff’s deputy was severely injured in a collision in Coushatta.
The crash claimed the life of 70-year-old Ella Winn, of Coushatta, according to Louisiana State Police.
It occurred about 9:45 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 22) on U.S. Highway 84 near Cut-Off Road.
Preliminary investigation shows that Sheriff’s Office unit had its emergency lights and sirens activated as 23-year-old Asia Pikes was driving the 2019 Chevorlet Tahoe west on U.S. 84. At the same time, Winn was driving a 2022 Nissan Rogue east on U.S. Highway 84. The Nissan turned left turn and the two vehicles collided.
Winn, who was not wearing a seat belt, as pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Pikes, who was properly restrained, sustained severe injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Impairment is not suspected; however, standard toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis.
“While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, Louisiana State Police urges drivers to obey all traffic laws, remain alert while driving and ensure every occupant is properly restrained,” Trooper Eddie Thomas said. “While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.”
