A man is dead after an officer involved shooting in Newton County. Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard says it happened shortly after 5:00 on Friday evening during a traffic stop on Highway 190 east of Newton.

Havard said that no law enforcement officers were injured.

According to the sheriff, the series of events began at about 4:30 when deputies went to a residence in the Buckhorn Community to serve a felony warrant. However, the wanted man fled on foot into a wooded area, and while deputies were searching for him he made his way back and hid inside a large tool box in the back of a pickup truck.

Havard said the deputies learned of this and they also received information that the man was armed.

The sheriff said shortly after 5:00 a deputy spotted the pickup truck on Highway 190 and initiated a traffic stop. He said the suspect popped up out of the tool box with a gun in his hand and pointed it at the deputy. He said the deputy shot the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the man has not yet been released.
