Angelina Co DA requests protection for witness in murder case after threats

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

The prosecution in a Lufkin murder case has made a request of the court in an attempt to protect a witness in a murder case. KTRE 9 News in Lufkin is reporting that the Angelina County District Attorney’s Office is preparing for trial in the case of Deedrick Renfro, 26, of Lufkin. He’s accused of the October 2020 shooting death of 19-year-old Elvin Alday, also of Lufkin, as he sat in the backseat of a vehicle on Timberland Drive. Another person, Penny Price, Jr., was also arrested and charged in the case. Prosecutor Janet Cassels has asked a State District Judge to allow the witness to testify through a LIVE video feed from a remote location. This, says Cassels, is due to alleged threats made to the witness by the girlfriend of the defendant. The judge has not yet rendered a decision on the request. Meanwhile, the trial is scheduled to start in December.
