NEWTON COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - Sheriff deputies from Newton County made 45 arrests and seized more than $73,000 after a multi-agency investigation into a dogfighting ring.
According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, around 9:50 p.m. Saturday, deputies serving a search warrant broke up an active dog‑fighting operation off FM 1004 in the Call community.
According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, most people at the scene fled into nearby woods but were later detained.
The NCSO says a drone using heat‑sensing technology helped officers spot lookouts around the property.
When deputies entered the property, two dogs were actively fighting inside a pit that appeared to have been built specifically for the operation. The two dogs were separated and taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment, according to the NCSO.
Authorities seized around $73,858 in U.S. currency and towed an estimated 40 vehicles from the property. Many of the vehicles, according to Newton County officials, contained suspected illegal drugs, firearms and visible cash.
Jasper County deputies also responded with two vans to assist in transporting those arrested to the Newton County Jail.
According to the NCSO, “Operation Pitbull” began in March after receiving multiple tips and complaints regarding dogfighting in the area.
Authorities said they plan to petition the court to forfeit currency and other items tied to criminal activity.
