NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KLTV) - Police say two people are dead and one is severely injured after a pick-up truck and box truck collided on Highway 21 Friday.
Officers responded to the 4000 block of East Main Street (Highway 21 East) around 12:45 p.m. Friday after several callers reported the collision, according to a release from the Nacogdoches Police Department.
Dakoda Bennefield, 27, of Nacogdoches, was driving east in a pick-up truck with Nancy Michelle Bennefield, 54, in the passenger seat. Preliminary evidence suggests an Isuzu box truck was driving west and swerved into the oncoming lane to avoid hitting a stopped vehicle, the release said.
When officers arrived, Dakoda Bennefield was found dead at the scene. Nancy Bennefield was taken to a hospital where she later died from her injuries. The box-truck driver was also taken to a hospital with severe injuries.
The highway closed for several hours Friday afternoon but was reopened Friday evening.
The incident is still under investigation.
