1 dead, 3 arrested after shooting at party in Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - One man is dead after being shot at a party in Polk County, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said around 1:07 a.m. Saturday morning calls came in saying someone had been shot at a location off U.S. Highway 146.

According to the sheriff’s office, responding deputies found Jeremy Lamar Bennett, 20, suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately started life-saving measures. While deputies were attempting to render aid, a fight broke out again among the crowd, forcing deputies to divert their attention in order to regain control of the scene.

Bennett taken to a hospital where he later died.

The sheirff’s office said a search warrant was executed at the property and led to the recovery of six guns, alcohol and drugs.

According to the sheriff’s office, investigators determined the gathering began as an after-prom party and grew into a large event where individuals were drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana and displaying firearms, ultimately contributing to the circumstances which led to a fight breaking out in the crowd.

The sheriff’s office said Osvaldo Daniel Alvarez, 19, told detectives while on scene that he had invited the crowd to his residence to continue the party and has been charged with deadly conduct. Gabriel Ramirez Jr., 21, has been charged with deadly conduct involving the discharge of a firearm and Jon R. Villarreal, 19, has been arrested for unlawful carrying of a weapon.
