WINN PARISH, La. (KALB) - The Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a scam where the scammer calls and advises that they missed a court appearance and must pay a particular amount to avoid arrest and jail time. Sheriff Josh McAllister advises that these scams are also occurring in other parishes. The caller is often from a foreign country and will name local officials to convince the prospective victim the call is legitimate. Some calls reported to the WPSO have come from 318-909-4059, but the scammers have a way of showing the call is from WPSO or other local phone numbers. The sheriff warns residents to hang up immediately. Do not give any personal information, such as social security numbers, bank account information and driver’s license numbers. Do not follow any phone prompts. Do not follow any instructions. Report this or similar scams to WPSO and remain vigilant. At no time will WPSO or any legitimate law enforcement agency call demanding money.
