As the sun went down on Monday evening the volunteers of numerous departments, along with the Texas Forest Service were fighting a large woods and grass fire north of Burkeville, not far south of the Toledo Bend Reservoir.
As the fire moved across the timberland, firefighters continued to battle the blaze, utilizing manpower, fire plows, water and even aircraft to bring the fire under control.
On the ground and leading the march early on the game was Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth who was one of the first to arrive on scene.
Some of the firemen were estimating that the fire, which was near Farm to Market Road 692 was spread over 150 acres. However, later in the evening it was reported that the largest portion of the fire was under control.
