Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard says a woman has died as the result of an accident involving a lawnmower in the Gist Area.
Havard said that shortly before 3:00 on Tuesday afternoon emergency dispatchers received a call from someone reporting that a woman was trapped under a lawnmower on County Road 3139. Havard said his deputies along with other emergency crews were dispatched to the area and rescued the woman from the mower. However, efforts to save her were not successful and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deceased was later identified as 51-year-old Rose Ella Proctor,
Havard said that a preliminary investigation revealed that Proctor had been mowing her yard when, for unknown reasons, she got off the lawn mower. Deputies discovered that the mower's safety control switch had been overridden and disconnected, allowing it to continue moving unattended. It is believed the mower then struck and ran over Proctor.
