High winds, snapping power lines and dry conditions resulted in two fires at almost the same time in the north end of Jasper County on Tuesday afternoon. The volunteers of both the Jasper and Lake Rayburn Fire Departments along with workers from the Texas Forest Service were dispatched to grass and wood fires at two locations just off of Highway 96 and south of Recreational Road 255 shortly before 1:00, when it was reported that fallen power lines had sparked grass and woods fires. The firemen worked to extinguish the fires as linemen from the electrical cooperative worked to restore power and it was later reported that the fire was out and most power restored without any injury.
