Wind toppled a tree onto a power line resulting in a wildfire in Newton County

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Newton Fire Department Captain Melanie Smith says heavy wind on Wednesday afternoon toppled a tree onto a power line and caused a wildfire. It happened on County Road 2001, about 3 miles southeast of Newton.

Newton firefighters were assisted by the Texas A&M Forest Service and they worked quickly to stop the spread of the blaze and to douse the flames.

Captain Smith said that although there is not a burn ban in Newton County, the fire department is asking people to not do any outdoor burning until after the wind calms down.
