What to expect in the Caddo Sheriff's race recount on Monday

SHREVEPORT, La - With the margin between the candidates standing at just one vote, it was inevitable that a recount would happen. Monday, we will discover if the results will take a different turn, as more than 7,700 absentee ballots will be recounted. "Whenever someone does a recount, there's really a couple of ways it can be approached. I think the first thing is the Elections Commission, which is composed of five people; one is appointed by the governor; there's one from each major political party, a Democrat and a Republican; and then Dale Sibley the register our voters; and Mike Spence, the clerk of court, will be there. They will decide how to approach this. I believe you'll see that the commission, by vote, decides to just scan the ballots. There's about 7,700." Said Scott Hughes, KTBS 3 political analyst. The Clerk of Court is required to submit a certified number by 4:00 p.m. Monday. "When the count comes out, then they'll decide what they do after that. I think you'll also see them address what will be considered an irregularity—some ballots that may have had more than one person marked. They may not have been formally in the right format, and there were some issues they had at some of the precincts. The commission will deal with those and decide how to deal with each of them." Said Hughes. Given the narrow margin in the race, there is a possibility that a swap could occur. "Based on what we've heard, there are at least three or four ballots that could be looked at closely. It's likely that this could turn and that we could flip sides. It's also likely that Mr. Whitehorn ends up with a wider margin; either one could happen. We won't know till the rescan.” Said Hughes. The recount is open to the public and will take place at the Caddo Parish Courthouse.
