VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - A wildfire in the Eustace area consumed around 105 acres on Thanksgiving Day.
According to South Van Zandt County Fire Department, Mabank VFD was sent to a large fire that erupted between FM 316 and FM 3980. Mutual aid was requested from South Van Zandt, Whitton, North 19, Payne Springs, Eustace, District 8 Fire Rescue, and Texas Forest Service.
The fire consumed about 105 acres, according to SVZ, and created dangerous conditions for firefighting crews. The fire spread rapidly across dry fields with wet ground underneath, leaving behind a scorched landscape visible over a large area and seen from a long distance away.
Texas Forest Service will remain in the area overnight and will continue work in the area until November 28.
They also said that during the suppression efforts, Whitton brush 3 became immobilized in the fire zone in attempts to save property, and was ultimately destroyed by the flames. No injuries were reported, but they noted, “the loss of equipment underscores the extreme hazards faced by first responders during wildland fire incidents.”
One resident in the area was taken by EMS to the emergency for smoke inhalation and related symptoms.
Fire departments were able to contain the fire, working to protect homes, livestock and other property. They remind residents of East Texas that it is critical to practice fire safety measures, especially during periods of elevated fire risk.
They said residents should avoid outdoor burning during dry or windy conditions, maintain all equipment to prevent sparks, and report any signs for fire or smoke in the area immediately.
The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
Whitton VFD is supported only by donations and fundraisers, one official said, so the loss of the brush truck will be difficult to overcome. If you would like to help in any way, call (903) 848-0260 or email whittonvfd@yahoo.com.
