A Montgomery man is dead, a second man is being treated at the hospital and a third is being questioned following a double shooting early Wednesday morning near Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish sheriff’s Capt. Tony Moran said.
The shooting happened shortly before 2 a.m. in the Payne Subdivision, which is where a double homicide happened in August. The neighborhood is located off state Highway 6 east of the Grand Ecore area near Natchitoches.
Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of Cherie Loop and found two gunshot victims.
Michael R. Burks, 22, of the 1100 block of Rogers Road in Montgomery, was pronounced dead at the scene by Natchitoches Parish Assistant Deputy Coroner Steven Clanton.
A 21-year-old Montgomery man was transported by EMS to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center and transferred to Rapides Regional Medical Trauma Center in serious condition, Moran said.
Shortly after the shooting, a man turned himself in to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office. He was detained and is being questioned. No charges have been filed.
Assistant Chief of Investigations Reginald Turner said detectives and patrol deputies worked throughout the night processing the crime scene and gathering evidence in the shooting investigation.
Detectives are in the preliminary stages of the investigation, interviewing the alleged shooter and multiple witnesses.
“We will release further information is the case unfolds,” Sheriff Victor Jones Jr. said.
In August, Cordarious Cortez Smith, 24, and Rodney D. Richards, 24, both of Natchitoches, died of multiple gunshot wounds. They were found in 2000 Nissan that had wrecked into a ditch and tree on Michelle Drive, which is also in the Payne Subdivision.
