Despite pleas from local fire departments for people to be careful with any outdoor burning, firefighters are still responding to wildfires caused by carelessness.
The Newton Fire Department says that was the case Thursday afternoon on Farm to Market Road 1020 in the Jamestown Community.
According to Newton Fire Captain Melanie Smith, a debris fire was left unattended and it spread onto a neighboring property where it destroyed a pickup truck and a car.
Captain Smith said approximately 3 acres were scorched and it took the combined efforts of Newton firefighters and the Texas A&M Forest Service to stop the flames.
