The Texas Department of Transportation is considering a plan to expand Highway 96 to 4 lanes north of Recreational Road 255. If the plan goes forward, the highway will be widened up to Loop 149 in Brookeland. TXDOT says widening the highway will improve the Highway 96 hurricane evacuation route, improve an important route for freight, and also improve access to and from the ports in Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. According to TXDOT, the steps involved are considering public comments, conducting environmental reviews, and finalizing design and construction plans.
