Two people die in Port Arthur house fire

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Two people are dead following a fire that occurred over the weekend in Port Arthur. Firemen were dispatched to a home in the 4100 block of Griffing Drive shortly before 3:00 on Sunday morning and arrived to find fire coming from both the front and back of the house. A short time later they found the body of man inside the home and the body of woman outside. Investigators now believe the man died in a bedroom of the residence, but the woman was able to make outside before dying. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Precinct 8, Justice of the Peace Tom Gilliam, III, who has requested an autopsy in the case. The deceased was later identified as 74-year-old Teresa Maldonado and her husband, 70-year-old Antonio Mendoza.
