Newton Fire Department Captain Melanie Smith says firefighters had to deal with two instances of trees crashing down onto houses on Monday. The first occurred at the Crystal Riggs residence, located at 519 East Court Street. Captain Smith said there were four people in the two-story house, and two of them were upstairs when the large tree crashed down through the roof. Captain Smith said the two people who were upstairs suffered non-life-threatening injuries and they were transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital. Smith said a tree also fell on another house on East Court Street, but there were no injuries in that incident.
