LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - One person is dead and two Texas Tech police officers are recovering after a shooting overnight on the north side of Jones AT&T Stadium.
Around 12:45 a.m., Tech police officers responded to a suspicious vehicle near Gate 3.
Texas Tech Police say the person inside the car pulled a gun and started shooting at officers.
The officers returned fire killing the suspect.
The two officers were taken to UMC with non-life threatening injuries. One officer has since been released.
The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is investigating the incident.
Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath said the threat was contained quickly and there was no danger to the campus community.
Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec says no TechAlert or emergency email was sent because of the quick response by officers along with other factors like the time of the shooting and it happening at a time where campus is quite empty from students and staff.
Widow of fallen Texas Tech Police Officer Floyd East Jr., Carmen East, issued a statement on behalf of the non-profit organization Texas635.
