SHREVEPORT, La. — A Caddo Parish jury on Wednesday convicted a Shreveport man of second-degree murder in the shooting death of another man during a drug deal.
Lloyd Cooks, 21, was found guilty by a jury in District Judge Chris Victory's court after approximately two hours of deliberation. Jurors determined that on the night of June 25, 2022, Cooks met Jeremy "Ruru" Wyatt, 31, at a local gas station to buy marijuana. Before the transaction was completed, Cooks exited his vehicle and fired more than two dozen shots from two different guns at Wyatt, killing him.
Testimony during the trial included an eyewitness from Wyatt's vehicle, responding officers, and Shreveport Police Department investigators. A forensic pathologist testified that Wyatt died from multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by both a pistol and a rifle. Cooks had previously given a statement to officers admitting to arranging the drug purchase, approaching Wyatt’s vehicle, and firing multiple shots. Portions of the incident were also captured on nearby surveillance video.
Cooks faces a mandatory life prison term at hard labor without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
