Shot fired at deputies, suspect in custody after standoff

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department says a man is in custody after he fired a shot at deputies and was then involved in a standoff that lasted several hours. Deputy Karli Cherry says it began at about 5:30 Saturday evening at a home on Farm to Market Road 1004 in the Buna area. Cherry said deputies responded to a report of a disturbance at that location and when they arrived the male fired a shot at them and then barricaded himself inside the house. According to Deputy Cherry, Jasper County deputies along with Kirbyville police and state troopers negotiated with the man and he finally surrendered peacefully. Cherry said he was then taken to a hospital in Beaumont for evaluation of his mental health crisis. Jasper County Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan said of the situation, "Everyone worked together for the safety of each other and this individual. At the end of the day, the goal is for everyone to go home safely. Good job." The name of the man was not immediately released.
