Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard says one of his deputies was involved in an early Monday morning shooting in the north end of the county. However, he says no injuries resulted from the incident and the suspect in the case is in jail.
The man has been identified as 42-year-old Jared Stephenson and he has been charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon and more charges are pending.
According to Havard it all began around 5:00, when a deputy was dispatched to County Road 190, where it was reported that Stephenson had shot at a family member.
Havard said that upon the officer's arrival at the scene a chase ensued and that it was first thought the suspect had fired a gun, prompting the deputy to return fire. However, Havard said it was late determined the suspect had instead thrown a gun and hit the side of a barn, making a large bang, which made the deputy believe he was fired on. Fortunately, no one was hit and no injuries resulted from the incident.
Havard said Stephenson was taken into custody and transported to the Jasper County Jail and an investigation was continuing to determine the circumstances of the case.
