Another traffic stop by the Sheriff himself has resulted in the arrest of a Port Arthur man following a brief chase that began in Newton County and ended in Jasper.
Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard, who is no newcomer to patrol after working for the Texas Department of Public Safety for many years, said he was in the Bleakwood Area shortly before 7:00 on Monday evening when he witnessed the driver of a motorcycle make several traffic violations. However, Havard said instead of pulling over and stopping the Suzuki GSXR 1000, the motorcycle took off at a high rate of speed.
Havard said the motorcycle continued north of Highway 87 with him not far behind and continued into Newton and past the courthouse where the cyclist turned west on Highway 190.
Havard said the chase continued with the motorcycle traveling at high speeds until it reached the intersection of Highways 190 and 63 on the east side of Jasper where the driver of the bike finally stopped and surrendered without incident.
Havard said the driver of the motorcycle which was later identified as Alexander Jose Gonzalez-Diaz was immediately transported back to Newton and placed in the Newton County Jail.
Sheriff Havard said he would be asking the courts to charge Diaz with Evading Arrest or Detention with a motor vehicle.
Havard said numerous other agencies become involved in chase and he praised their actions and assistance.
